Lawmakers are in the news lately with transportation funding packages that include an increased gas tax. In Washington State, an additional gas tax was passed that will make its tax the third highest in the country. As with most tax issues, folks typically line up on their respective side of the aisle for or against it. As an advocate for transportation infrastructure, I'd encourage you to take a look at the numbers and decide....does it seem like a fair price to you?

While the new standards apply only to Washington for now, other states are certain to follow suit. There’s something wrong with how we are taught to approach street design in America. The conventional transportation mindset dictates high speed and level of service for cars over long distances, which requires large arterial roads. Unfortunately, this approach ignores other modes of transportation such as bicycling and walking. While there’s a lot of talk about complete streets these days, I believe too often the conversation is still focused on cars.
