Taking Risks in 2015.....

This past month our fearless leader, Tim Schauer, was asked to contribute an article to the Vancouver Business Journal.  They asked him to share his thoughts regarding the economic outlook for our industry in the coming year. The article is below.

At the turning of the year, as we reflect on the road our businesses just traveled while attempting to forecast the road ahead, I’m struck with the ever-present truth that the only certainty is uncertainty. I suggest that your willingness to plan for uncertainty is the biggest influencer for any economic forecast. The economy is recovering with some vigor, but it’s a different economy. Businesses and their employees are spending money differently – from advertising, to borrowing, to organization participation. The old economy isn’t coming back. Like a successful new year’s diet (keyword: successful), the necessary changes can’t be temporary until you feel better. To stay successful, behavior has to evolve permanently.

Toys for Tots

Last week I had the pleasure to volunteer at our local Toys for Tots facility (Kennewick, Washington).  As a member of the United Way's Young Leader Society, I was asked to support this effort by sorting toys that were either donated or purchased by the local unit.

I have to admit that prior to spending four hours here, I did not realize the level of effort involved for this mission, to make sure every child receives gifts on Christmas.  I learned that over 2,000 families in our area benefit from this incredible campaign.  Locally, hundreds of volunteer sort the toys by age group and price range, then bag them for distribution.

Started by the US Marine Corp Reserves, this program collects new, unwrapped toys each year and distributes them as Christmas Gifts to less fortunate children.  The goal is to provide hope to these youngsters, hope that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.

I appreciate the opportunity to share about this organization. While the campaign is complete for 2014, I look forward to continuing to support it for years to come.

The MacKay Sposito Veterans Support Council organized a company-wide gift card drive last month, and last week Eric Abbott and Pam Hoerle had the pleasure of delivering over $2,400.00 worth of assorted gift cards that we had collected to the Joint Services Support/Family Programs team (J9) at Camp Murray in Tacoma.    They received quite a reception and were able to meet most, if not all, of the J9 Team.  The J9 folks were very appreciative of our donation and presented MSi with a Certificate of Appreciation plaque.

Friday morning, December 12, we were proud to be the presenting sponsor for the jointly hosted Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, Columbia River Economic Development Council, and Identity Clark County 2015 Legislative Outlook Breakfast.  We have supported this event for several years, demonstrating our encouragement to our local legislators and elected leaders to keep Clark County's business interests at the forefront of their minds.

Tim was given an opportunity to speak to the audience where he emphasized the positive outlook for our industry and the economy in the coming year.  He also mentioned our 40th anniversary and our legacy of community involvement!
